A really techie matter and gets even more if you are to discuss about super computers.Sequoia the fastest super computer has set very high standards by performing 16.32 petaflops on the Lin pack Benchmark.Sequoia was simulated to use it for the safety and efficacy of the United States Nuclear weapons. The United States of America has regained the crown as the IBM developed Sequoia is 1.55 times more faster from Japan's K Computer made by Fujitsu.
To make the tech statistics more understandable IBM was quoted as saying that the supercomputer is capable of calculating in one hour what otherwise it would have taken 6.7 billion people using hand calculators 320 years if they worked non stop.
Further Sequoia is even more energy efficient than the Fujitsu model. It consumes just 7.9 megawatts as compared to K computer which uses 12.6 megawatts. As pointed out by the super computer team lead sequoia has attained the pinnacle of energy efficiency
In the current high technology era super computers come of tremendous use in a variety of fields including earth science, astronomy,Geophysics, medicine and nuclear science. The machine will facilitate in better understanding of nuclear weapons performance especially the hydrodynamics, temperature, pressure which would provide a platform for effective nuclear testing.
It is installed at the United States Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and entered the headlines on June 18,2012.
